The servers behind your zones

Two authoritative name servers, named after the people who invented the DNS.

Your zones are served by paul and jon — a hidden-primary/secondary pair on separate networks and continents, kept in sync automatically.

Name servers

paul & jon

Both answer authoritatively for every hosted zone, on two independent locations.

Why these names

A small tribute to the inventors of the DNS

We named our name servers after two people without whom the DNS would not exist as we know it.

Paul Mockapetris

Inventor of the DNS · 1983

Paul Mockapetris designed the Domain Name System and wrote the original specifications (RFC 882/883, later replaced by RFC 1034/1035). His design replaced the single, hand-maintained HOSTS.TXT file with a distributed, hierarchical naming system that still scales the Internet today.

Jon Postel

RFC Editor & IANA · 1943–1998

Jon Postel edited hundreds of RFCs, ran the IANA for decades and shaped the protocols and number/name allocation the Internet is built on. His pragmatic “be conservative in what you send, liberal in what you accept” is still quoted today.

Under the hood

A few technical details

Non-sensitive facts about how the authoritative DNS is operated.

PowerDNS authoritative

Both servers run the PowerDNS authoritative engine with a database backend, driven by the same management API.

Primary / secondary sync

paul is the hidden primary; jon receives every change via authenticated zone transfer, so answers stay consistent across both locations.

DNSSEC signing

Zones can be signed online with managed KSK/ZSK keys; matching DS records are provided for your registrar.

IPv4 & IPv6, TCP & UDP

Every server answers over IPv4 and IPv6 on port 53 (UDP and TCP) with EDNS0 support for larger responses.

Authenticated updates

Zone changes and optional dynamic DNS updates are protected with TSIG keys, so only the platform can modify a zone.

Two NS by default

New zones are delegated to paul.dremaxx.de and jon.dremaxx.de; you can add your own additional name servers on top.
